The Science of Wholeness: Part Two
LESSON #10: ACIDOPHILUS, PROTEIN AND POWERFUL COMBINATIONS 10.1: THE BENEFITS OF FRIENDLY BACTERIA ARE GREAT: Acidophilus is such a significant contribution to health, wholeness and longevity in itself that it deserves a whole lesson on the subject. Many raw fruits and raw vegetables, especially cabbage, and definitely sauerkraut naturally contain an abundance of these organisms. Numerous healthfood books have been written on the health benefits of lactobacilus acidophilus, bifidus, and many others. They benefit the body by keeping conditions in the colon most favorable for increased absorption of B complex vitamins and other nutrients, while making it unfavorable for harmful organisms and undesirable, toxin-producing bacteria, thereby sweetening and freshening the breath and one's disposition. Those who are very sensitive to changes in body chemistry or suffer from "candida type" symptoms claim to enjoy much better health and well-being and freedom from such symptoms when they take acidophilus with every meal. Raw Food: Essential Striving Toward Fulfillment Celibacy and Nutrition Heal Anxiety with Diet Essential Role of Diet Diet, Metabolsim, Enlightenment Dangers of Ultraviolet Light... 10.2: ACIDOPHILUS HELPS TO CREATE IDEAL METABOLIC CONDITIONS: Remember how important it is to have most efficient metabolism in order to meditate more deeply? Acidophilus and other similar lactobacilus organisms have very compatible chemistries to the human organism and therefore could thrive in the colon in a sort of symbiotic relationship with the cells of the human body--a relationship of mutual benefit. The chemistry and ezymatic makeup of acidophilus a living material very helpful in maintaining and upholding the complex functions of human cell metabolism. Living acidophilus organisms, like human cells, produce lactic acid as a metabolic by-product which can make the colon more acidic and therefore antiseptic against unfriendly, disease causing bacteria and also possibly preventing colon cancer or making it less possible. Acidophilus acts as vital enzymes in the break-down of foods in the final stages of digestion, eliminating constipation, gas, indigestion, bad breath and reducing unplesant body odors. The more abundant and the more established acidophilus and other symbiotic organisms are in the colon the better for one's health and colon condition. The bad stench often associated with a bowel movement is NOT normal! The modern American diet (MAD) of red meat, pizzas, alcohol, sodas and white flower products with no yougurt or acidophilus result in an extremely unpleasant odor associated with elimination and bad breath. The whole colon is often overrun with putrefactic bacteria that thrives on rotting meat (dead fleash) leading to colon cancer and other serious forms of cancer. This is one reson why I never eat red meat. Believe it or not, it is possible to have absolutely odorless bowel movements once one has eaten a raw food vegetarian diet along with regular consumption of kombucha, sauerkraut, yogurts, etc. for several months. Imagine always having naturally healthy fresh breath and body odor! This is only one of the great benefits of living on the "Science of Wholeness" diet, obviously a vastly more sensible diet than the "M.A.Diet." 10.3: LACTOBACILUS SEEMS TO PROTECT AND ENHANCE BRAIN CHEMISTRY: Lactobacilus deserves an honorable mention and should be given top priority as part of every meal in everyone's diet. Because acidophilus aids in the digestive process, less energy goes into digestion and more is left over for other functions, especially for the ability to meditate successfully. Toxins from undesirable bacteria in colon can easily be taken up by the bloodstream and enter through the blood-brain barrier and cause disruption in the delicate workings of neurochemical brain function. The effects of having a chronic toxic colon condition can be insidious to the normal functions of every organ in the body. 10.4: A POTENT SOURCE OF LACTOBACILUS IS AVAILABLE AT YOUR HEALTH FOOD STORE: Protect your colon, keep it healthy with a regular and plentiful supply of acidophilus, bifidus, and others. Organic Raw Kombucha is a "tea" made from fermented yeast and acidophilus, etc. growing together in a symbiotic relationship. A product by G. T. Dave seems to be the most reliable source for this product which has so many health benefits I cannot name them all right here. Nature's Life "Apple Honey Acidophilus" is another source of liquid acidophilus. The quality and tartness (important indication of lactobacilus activity) has varied considerably with other companies, but, over the years, I've never had any trouble with Nature's Life. I am not certain of the reliability of acidophilus in dried powder or in capsule form regardless of what company makes it. However, just a few days after writing the above statement and to my extreme amazement and consternation, my local health food store immediately stopped stocking liquid acidophilus, saying that it is too unreliable altogether. Now I am left with just the capsule form and they say that dried acidophilus in capsules is actually much more reliable. One thing for sure, however, is that powdered acidophilus must always be kept well refrigerated to maintain it's potency. One would have to consume many capsules to get the same results achieved from drinking large quantities of liquid acidophilus. Part of the benefit comes from the lactic acid present in the liquid form. I cannot taste much in the capsules, however, Nature's Life claims to contain 1 billion organisms per capsule. Capsules are obviously more convenient to take. Of course, yogurt and cultured buttermilk are other options but I am finding dairy proteins seem to interfere with feelings of wholeness. I first wrote this chapter on acidophilus in 1994 but things keep changing and much better products such as Kombucha keep coming up. Now, 13 years later, there is a much, more effective supplement to take that has permanent benefits. These benefical "soil organisms" are so potent, that once they are established in the digestive system, they are there for good or at least as long as one remains on a raw food diet and remains healthy enough to never need antibiotics. For information on HSO (Homeostatic Soil Organisms) click on Garden Of Life Primal Defense - A potent probiotic for a healthy inner environment Utilizes 14 different probiotic strains. Contains naturally occurring vitamins, minerals, enzymes, amino acids, and more. Primal Defense is a natural whole-food probiotic blend of HSOs (Homeostatic Soil Org.) It is also available in most healthfood stores. There is also good reason to believe that the large quantities of acidophilous and other beneficial soil bacteria are all naturally and abundantly present in all organically grown ripe fruit, and crisp, clean, healthy raw vegetables. 10.5: PPROTEIN AND STRESS: It is essential to have protein with every meal but only that which is in proportion to one's mental condition. During times of anxiety, stress, sleeplessness and/or food cravings try increasing one's whole protein intake by eating more fresh whole raw egg milk, chlorella, food grade yeast, whole yogurt, kefir, and/or soy milk with every meal. If too much depression and/or fatgue/sleepiness is a common problem, then try reducing whole food protein intake. Balancing the correct amount of whole protein food in one's diet can be critical in sensitive individuals. There are circumstances when stress, either physical or emotional becomes so extreme that generous quantities of proteins from various sources such as kefir, several different kinds of nuts and seed combined, Hawaiian spiralina, and chlorella can help one recover. If one is suffering from stress, depression, anxiety, fatigue, poor appetite or food cravings, extra protein with every meal might be an important part of what is needed to return to normal balance. Soy-based protein powder, which must go through many stages of extreme heating and processing, may contain impurities, toxins, etc. Best to get your protein from a VARIETY of vegetarian food sources. Pure protein is 4 calories per gram (complex carbohydrates: 4 calories per gram, fats: 9 calories per gram) and is very filling, fully satisfying in that it is essential for correct regulation of appetite. In situations when more protein is needed, it seems to help digestion, as well as metabolic efficiency, giving one more energy, strength, calmness, and faster recovery during rest. In combination with a complete B complex supplement, it can, in many cases, help put right the following problems: confusion, chronic fatigue, poor memory, and loss of ambition, inspiration, drive and sense of purpose. The physical brain and most of its neurotransmitters come from certain proteins (such as tryptophan and phenylalanine) that must be available at the levels needed for optimal mental functioning. This relationship of protein to many brain chemicals explains why many people depend on a regular supply of protein just to stay free of mental and emotional suffering such as insomnia, excessive sleep, inability to follow through on projects, fatigue, anxiety, irritability, and depression. 10.6: COMBINATIONS ARE POWERFUL: When a whole series of positive factors are combined with other positive factors, you create an overall synergistic effect that's far greater than just the sum of its parts. What has negative ions got to do with acidophilus? They can both add to one's sense of well-being and wholeness. When these are in turn combined with conservation of vital sexual energy, regular exercise, use of vibration for relaxation, practicing breathing exercises, meditating on the inner "Om" sound, fasting on large quantities of water, eating mainly whole raw foods, supplementing enzymes, antioxidants, proteins, herbs, and so on, you get a complete "wholeness matrix" of interacting parts to create a much more effective life of satisfying totality. Every single positive factor you decide to install into your lifestyle will tend to interact synergistically in various ways with all the other parts, leading to an overall sense of well-being and inner strength which, of course is both wonderful and most practical. All these parts are meant for getting one ever closer to a much greater degree of wholeness and enlightenment. At least that is the main reason for all these factors besides just getting rid of physical and emotional troubles. It now depends on you how many more exciting causes for happiness you might discover and want to apply in your life. 10.7: AVOID EXTREMES: The yoga student is told to never strain nor go too far. Balance in all things is essential. Wholeness is rarely reached through discomfort, which can often do more harm than good and send one further away from the goal. Wholeness is deep, inner balance and comfort achieved through providing one's self the exact needs of the mind, body and soul. Never be too mechanical nor inflexible when following these lessons. Allow for individual differences and needs. Measure your progress in "units" of common sense and happiness. 10.8: ADDING JUICE TO WATER MAY NOT BE GOOD: Drink plenty of plain or ionized water between meals. Drinking large quantities of juice or adding juice to water between meals under certain situations might not be the best thing to do. One would not really be fasting; it would actually have the same negative, imbalancing effects as snacking on incomplete meals. Be careful not to store watered down juice at too warm of a temperature or it could become fermented or contaminated with bacteria. It is especially imporant for those suffering from candida sensitivity to avoid adding juices to their water and snacking between meals. However, if you feel famished simply get yourself a full, complete meal. Then you'll find it is much, much easier to go for many, many hours before feeling hungry again and at the same time feel better than ever. It is really the most natural thing in the world to do. In many cases, especially if overweight, regular daily water fasts would most likely be cleansing and beneficial. 10.9: ENERGY REQUIREMENTS FOR MEDITATION ARE COMPARED TO REQUIREMENTS FOR GYMNASTICS AND MARATHONS: Imagine a massive gathering being held for several athletic competitions. What if we also held a "meditation marathon" where yogis come together to see who can meditate the longest? Is my idea unusual and controverisial enough to get you to wonder about me? Spiritual goals require a great deal of vital life-force energy (that 's why mystics conserve their vital fluids) and require nutrients too. Sitting to meditate and performing a few breathing exercises may not seem like much, but if not enough energy and circulation is available for such an important inner mission, one could just end up going nowhere fast!--nodding off and going into a trance (tandra) instead of super-consciousness. Nodding off just when one is trying to concentrate ones attention at the third eye is a very common and serious road-block preventing millions of yogis every year from enjoying samadhi. This is a very serious problem requiring that the mind, before meditation, be vitalized with ojas, negative ions, orgone (bioplasmic) energy, and excellent circulation. Excellent nutrition, a good run or long walks through natural areas followed by invigorating breathing excercises might be just what is needed. You might try an experiment. Right before meditation, if you feel you need it, why not do something similar to what athletes do to prepare themselves for competition? By taking a combination of cayenne pepper (or fresh ginger root), chlorella, raw fruit and vegetable juices and ionized water right before meditating, you can go much deeper. Cayenne improves circulation so well it made me believe that good circulation seems to be even more important than good nutrition! Cayenne will be discussed in Lesson 12. Avoid meditating right after a heavy meal. Much energy is needed for digestion, so it is better to meditate while fasting rather than right after eating, otherwise, digestion could shut off during deep meditation, causing indigestion and bloating. A similar thing would happen swimming strenuously right after a meal. I found the comparison of sports and meditation helpful in understanding new ways to boost the ability to concentrate. The brain and nervous system require large amounts of energy for maximum functioning. 10.10: IS ONE MEAL A DAY FOR YOU? When I became more advanced in my diet, I discovered I could go for 24-72 hours without discomfort, yet seem to have more energy, strength, joy, and mental clearity. Eating only once a day a meal very high in saturated fats and proteins, fruit and vegetable juices, herbs and supplements seemed to give me significant, overall benefit. However, I could not maintain this regimen indefinitely until I drank large amounts of negatively charged ionized water (which has its own benefits) between every daily meal. Celibacy & Transmutation of Sexual Energy Just as humankind has learned to master and control many natural forces in the world, a yogi (or yogini) is a very special (and unfortunately rare) individual who's inclination is to control and master the inner forces of nature, such as thoughts, emotions, cravings, and desires, especially the biological force of sexual energy. The yogi or yogini manages to successfully master his or her emotions and sexual energy not by force, but through purification of brain and body cells and then by absorption of vital prana. The transmutation of sex into inner peace, bliss, joy and love is the wonderful end result. One of the greatest mysteries of life is sex, sexual desire, and sexual energy. However, when sexual energy is lost in the process of reproductive activity, the spiritual life suffers. When I discovered negatively ionized "microwater", I found I could go back to eating only one meal a day and sometimes even every other day because of the energizing, healing, cleansing and hunger satisfying effects of this super-charged fluid. Not enough good can be said about this alkalizing and purifying water. I have much to say about the benefits of water, but have even more praise for the more refreshing qualities of ionized water on other parts of this website. A high nutrient density vegetarian regimen should be beneficial for anyone, because all the real physiological needs are taken care of rather than confusing or digressing them with cooked, dead, processed, empty calories. Raw, biologically efficent food has very obvious advantages, that could help one out of a lifetime of serious depression and chronic fatigue. Experiment carefully with your diet and see what works best for you. Part of the reason for my past suffering might be because I may have, through too much exposure to toxins (pesticides? DDT? Heavy metals? I am still wondering) early in life, an "allergic" brain sensitiviy to candida and most kinds of food. Candida is a common yeast that lives inside most poeple's bodies, usually without causing much trouble. Yeast thrives on sugar, warmth and moisture and therefore, whenever I ate carbohydrates, especially simple carbohydrates, within hours, I would get vertigo, terrible anxiety, depression, and insomnia followed by sleeping the next day at inappropriate times. It is very challenging and even can be detrimental to metabolic efficientcy removing carbohydrates from one's diet. But by eating less often a meal high in protein and fatty acids, which candida cannot utilize very well, the candida would literally be starved out of existence. Regardless of whether it was candida or not causing my symptoms, I would feel more normal again. Other food sensitivities and infectious problems may be helped this way. This is just a theory. All I know is snacking on carbohydrates makes things far worse, while infrequent WHOLE, high nutrient density meals make my anxiety causing food sensitivity problems much easier to manage! My digestion runs much smoother and physical illnesses, etc. rarely, if ever, get in my way. 10.11: FOR MAXIMUM JOY AND HAPPINESS TRY THE FOLLOWING NATURAL ANTIDEPRESSANTS: Kava kava, St. John's wort, milk thistle, licorice root, savory, lemon balm, catnip, Korean ginseng root, and ginkgo biloba. The above are available in health food stores, are inexpensive, require no perscription, and have few known side-effects except better health and more libido. Many of these herbs seem very soothing and theraputic for the nerves, possibly increasing life span by reducing stress and providing natural antioxidants that mop up free-radicals. Depression is epidemic and can be a major block to successful meditation and samadhi. Because there are so many botanical herbs known to treat depression, very few need to suffer more from this awful and insidious problem! Other supplements that might work include: DMAE (2-dimethyl-aminoethanol), 500 mg. potassium aspartate and 500 mg. magnesium aspartate (a combination used to boost energy), and L-carnitine. L-carnitine is an amino acid that has worked well for me. Large quantities of all eightessential amino acids can be obtained from protein powder (see Lesson 10.5) with good results. Isolated amino acids such as L-tryptophan (at this time unjustly banned by the FDA), DLPA, L tyrosine, L-methionine, GABA (best for anxiety), and many other free-form isolated amino acids taken between meals have been used for the treatment of depression depending on severity and individual biochemical needs. Lecithin, I have found, after several days of a daily intake of six or more tablespoons, enhances the quality of my breathing and meditation practices. For you, lecithin may make the difference between spectacular results and no results at all, therefore, try adding it every single day to your diet. Lecithin has 250 mg. of inositol, and 450 mg. choline per tablespoon. It benefits blood cholesterol levels and provides a protective coating for the nerves. CAUTION: If you happen to be taking standard pharmaceutical MAO inhibitors, NEVER eat foods such as pineapple, sauerkraut, cheese, yogurt, ripe bananas, figs, raisins, nor try any other supplements. FIRST consult your physician. Depression and/or anxiety can be a serious medical problem needing emergency professional attention. For more information about depression and related disorders on my website, you can go here. Variations in protein/fat/carbohydrate ratios can effect significant changes. I tend to fare much better eating a meal high in protein and fatty acids, and very low in complex carbohydrates (whole grains). Different people have different metabolic needs. Most people live on the standard medium protein, high complex carbohydrate, and low fat diet. Some, however, may find renewed energy, control of appetite, blood sugar levels, and a positive change in attitude (even weight loss) by reducing their simple and complex carbohydrate intake. In all cases though, to keep energy levels and blood circulation (and therefore moods) more even, refrain from substances high in simple or refined carbohydrates such as sugars, sweets, pastries, white bread, chocolate, dried fruits, soda pop, concentrated fruit juices, etc. AVOID red meats including hamburger, hot dogs, lamb, beef, veal, pork, or anything smoked.
